Pretty Hurts

Pretty Hurts…
Females are subjected to criticism and body image before they even hit puberty
Girls must be slim but not too thick or too skinny
Makeup is considered a necessity
Skin bleaching or tanning is considered the norm
I Am Not My Hair…
Blondes have more fun
Straight hair is better than natural, and weave is a must
Reveal too much skin and be open about your sexuality,
and you‘re promiscuous
Dress conservatively and remain celibate,
and you‘re a prude
Reveal your animosity about rape or sexual discrimination,
you’re a feminist
Sex sells and females are sexually exploited though the media,
but they preach that women should value their bodies
Beauty Is Only Skin Deep…
Intelligence is associated with lack of good looks,
and if a woman is smart and “pretty”, she is considered a rare breed
A woman must choose between her career and motherhood,
because she cannot be good at one job, without failing at another
If a girl is made a mother before she is ready,
she is criticized regardless of the decision she makes,
even though it is her life, her body
She must act like a lady, and think like a man
She must always maintain a perfect appearance
She must not make herself too available, too easy,
but she must not let a man wait too long otherwise she will lose him
She must abide by the double standard or be judged by society
Women who have high standards are too high maintenance,
and must learn to settle for whatever or whoever life gives them
Women are weak and feebleminded,
too emotionally unstable to make rational decisions
Not enough positivity associated with a females’ persona,
and too much prominence on her figure
Yielding women to be more obsessed with what they see in the mirror,
than the beauty in their intellect
Wanting men to stimulate their sexual desires,
without allowing them to first stimulate their mind
Women,
when will we come to see,
inside and out we are as beautiful as can be
Don’t let this world consume you,
be who you are and you’ll love the person it molds you into

Tryna find herself

This journey called life, she’s tryna find herself
Trying to put the past behind her she’s beside herself
No idea where’s shes going but that won’t stop her
The road to success is a tough one but there’s no stopping no matter who or what tries to defer
Never forget where she came from but always remember
The past doesn’t define you it’s what you do from January to December
Life is what you make it
No matter how the shoe fits
Your experiences can make or break you
But what matters is the lessons you learn and the person it molds you into
This journey called life she’s tryna find herself
Trying to be a better person, trying to make amends with herself
Being selfish, for once putting her needs first
But nothing ever seems to go as planned, always seems to get worst
Things take time, and time heals all
But how come every time she tries, she falls?
She wants so badly to be the woman she was meant to be
despite her downfalls, imperfections and adversities
This journey called life, she’s tryna find herself
Full of twists and turns she wonders will she ever find herself ?
Will she ever be all that she was destined to be?
Completely independent and emotionally debt free?
More than her looks, she wants to be recognized for such
But all guys seem to notice is what’s on the surface to touch
The road to success is a tough one she knows
And on her journey she wonders how many friends will turn into foes
As time moves on and things change,
So many people and things become estranged
Everything happens for a reason she is told,
But until something great comes of that she won’t be sold
Watching the people you love walk out of your life doesn’t seem meant to be,
She’s tired of people telling her how to feel without bothering to walk a mile in her shoes, how could you possibly see?
This journey called life she’s tryna find herself
Wishing she could see into the future and see how she lived
Wishing she could rewind to the past and undo some of the things that she did
Wishing herself back to the present she tries to bury her doubts along with all of the negativities that she’s hid
This journey called life she’s trying to find herself,
Will she ever find success,
Will she ever truly find herself ?

Ferguson

Eyes follow him as he walks throughout the store
Shots fired as he reaches for the candy in his pocket
Gunned down before he even makes it to the alter
Killed even though he had his hands up in surrender
In the land of the “free”,
civil rights are revoked and justice turns the other cheek
Those that are meant to protect and serve,
instead contribute to lives lost
Pulling the trigger first and asking questions later
Not stopping to think of that person as a human being,
as someone’s son, brother, husband or friend
While they go home and enjoy the luxury of tucking in their kids at night,
someone’s family is planning a funeral
Someone’s world has been shattered into pieces and turned upside down
Black, White, Hispanic or Asian
No one deserves to die
People end up in the wrong place, at the wrong time
People make mistakes, make bad decisions
But only God can judge us.
only he has the right to determine who remains on this earth
It’s not an issue of Black and White some say,
because people want to pretend that racism no longer exists
That because movements have taken place, and laws have been enforced,
stereotypes don’t exist and racial profiling is unheard of
But even though we’ve come so far,
in the year 2014 it is still prevalent.
This is the beginning of a revolution, a war
And the people say no more
I am tired
They are tired
WE are tired
In the land of the free,
people have the privilege of defending their 15th amendment rights
And so it begins
And for those who say it is pointless. It is only temporary, or that it won’t make a difference…
We understand your lack of courage and pity your ignorance
If you do not stand for something,
You will fall for anything
So why not stand up for what’s right?
Before falling for what you know is wrong

Journey

This thing called life
Crazy thing that it is
Amazing the places it can take you,
and the opportunities it leads to
“No one ever said life’s perfect” they say,
And sure enough there are plenty of twists and turns along the way
Pain so incredible it’s inevitable
You’ll experience heartbreak, loss and change in every sense, leaving you in intense dismay
You’ll strive to be a better person then you were yesterday
To live out your dreams and start a family because that’s the American way
You’ll search for happiness in every aspect
But true joy comes from within ourselves though most seem to neglect
Some seem to forget
You can’t look to other people to be the man or woman YOU are meant to be then get upset
We’re all searching for that one thing that defines us in retrospect
Maybe we look at this thing called life all wrong
The never ending cycle of growth is only meant to make us strong
While we search for who we are, we constantly evolve
Each experience like the piece to a puzzle we struggle to solve
But life is filled with millions of pieces we may never absolve
Everyone has a story, a past and a present that defines who they are
Although we can’t always control what transpires we have the power to set the bar
Sky was the limit until man walked on the moon
Walk to the beat of your own drum and eventually you’ll discover the rhythm to your own tune.
